Information Building Blocks: Open Data Initiatives and Trends

Description: More data are being generated than ever before. Data are fast becoming the backbone for research and scientific breakthroughs. Finding ways to leverage the use of data across disciplines and programs through open data initiatives that promote the reuse of data for a variety of research goals is an important step toward the discovery of new innovations. HealthData.gov and other projects are making open data trends more commonplace in health sciences research. Health sciences librarians play an important role in organizing and curating data. Librarians also play a vital role in promoting open data initiatives and projects. This session will focus on the roles that librarians play in open data initiatives at their respective institutions.

Description: A librarian’s research expertise and knowledge of academic information resources are valuable input elements for the success of translational medical research. This session is focused on the role of medical librarians in their support of translational science research, their engagement in the development of translational interdisciplinary collaborative partnerships, their involvement in the education of translational scientists, and their function in bridging science and the community.

Description: Allied health professionals are our allies in “Building Our Information Future,” whether they work in hospitals, allied health schools, or community practice settings. Often busy librarians, especially those in hospitals or medical schools, find that physicians, nurses, residents, and students place a greater demand on their time and resources, yet the needs of the allied health professionals must also be supported. This program will explore ways that librarians support allied health professionals, schools, and students and meet their informational needs.
